Measurements are body measurements, not the measurements of the dress.
Find Your Sherri Hill Size
Enter your three measurements. The finder matches each one to the chart and suggests the size that fits your largest measurement, the way a fitting stylist would.
A starting point, not a guarantee: try the style on at an authorized retailer, where a stylist can confirm your size and talk you through alterations.
Want to know which silhouettes suit you, too?
The Fit Finder uses the same measurements to find your body shape, then suggests silhouettes and necklines to try, with the size for each silhouette.
Try The Fit FinderHow To Measure Yourself
Use a soft tape measure, keep it level and snug but not tight, and wear the undergarments you plan to wear to your event. Measurements are most accurate when someone helps you.
-
01
Bust
Measure over the fullest part of your bust.
-
02
Waist
Measure around the smallest part of your waist, about 1–2 inches above your belly button.
-
03
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips.
Go by your measurements, not the size you usually wear.
Formal wear is sized differently from everyday clothing. Most people wear a Sherri Hill size one to two sizes larger than their jeans or streetwear size. That's normal, and it isn't a reflection of your everyday size.
Wear the shoes and undergarments you'll wear to your event when you measure and when you try on.
How Each Silhouette Fits
Which measurement matters most depends on the shape of the dress. Fitted styles need all three to match; fuller skirts are more forgiving through the hips.
-
Mermaid
Fit to Bust, waist and hips
Fitted from the bodice through the hips, then flares at or below the knee. Choose your size by all three measurements; your hips matter as much as your bust.

A-Line
Fit to Bust and waist
Fitted through the bodice, then flares gradually from the waist. The skirt leaves room through the hips, so focus on your bust and waist.
Shop A-Line Dresses -
Ball Gown
Fit to Bust and waist
A fitted bodice with a full skirt from the waist. Fit the bodice; the skirt is forgiving through the hips.
Shop Ball Gowns -
Empire Waist
Fit to Bust
The skirt falls from just under the bust, so your bust measurement matters most. There is more room through the waist and hips.

Fabric matters too. Stretch fabrics have some give; structured, beaded and sequined fabrics have very little, so those styles depend most on accurate measurements. Shop by silhouette.
Plan On Alterations
Nearly every formal gown is finished by a seamstress. Off-the-rack dresses are cut to a standard chart, not to an individual body, so hems, bust and waist are usually adjusted. Budget time and money for it.
Easy To Adjust
- Length
- Floor-length gowns are usually hemmed to your height and the shoes you'll wear. Bring your shoes to every fitting.
- Taking in
- A gown can be taken in at the side seams for a closer fit through the bust and waist.
- Straps
- Straps can be shortened so the bodice sits where it should.
Harder To Change
- Letting out
- Seam allowances are small, so a dress can only be let out a little, if at all. That's why you choose the size for your largest measurement.
- Adding length
- There is usually little extra fabric in the hem to let down.
- Beaded areas
- Beading and sequins are removed and re-sewn by hand around any new seam, so allow extra time.
Many authorized retailers alter in house or can recommend a seamstress experienced with beaded fabrics.

Answers to the fit and sizing questions shoppers ask most.
What size should I order in Sherri Hill?
Measure your bust, waist and hips, compare them to the Sherri Hill size chart, and choose the size that fits your largest measurement. Don't go by the size you wear in everyday clothes: formal gowns are sized differently, and most people wear a Sherri Hill size one to two sizes larger than their jeans or streetwear size.
Do Sherri Hill dresses run small?
Sherri Hill gowns follow structured formal wear sizing, which runs smaller than everyday clothing sizes. Most people wear one to two sizes larger in Sherri Hill than in jeans or streetwear. That's normal for formal wear, and your measurements, not your usual size, are the reliable guide.
What sizes does Sherri Hill make?
Sherri Hill styles come in US sizes 000 through 26. Not every style is cut in every size, and stores don't carry every size, so check the style's page for its size range. Your nearest authorized retailer can check whether your size is available to order.
What if my measurements fall in different sizes?
Choose the size that fits your largest measurement. A seamstress can take a gown in far more easily than she can let it out, because seam allowances are small. For example, if your bust is a size 6 and your hips are a size 8, choose the 8 and have the bodice taken in.
How do I measure myself for a formal dress?
Use a soft tape measure and wear the undergarments you plan to wear to your event. Measure your bust over the fullest part, your waist around the smallest part (about 1–2 inches above your belly button), and your hips around the fullest part. Keep the tape level, and ask someone to help for the most accurate result.
Can a Sherri Hill dress be altered?
Yes. Nearly every formal gown is finished by a seamstress. Hemming for your height and shoes, shortening straps and taking in the side seams are common. Letting a dress out or adding length is much harder, and beaded areas take extra hand work. Many authorized retailers offer alterations or can recommend a seamstress experienced with beaded fabrics.
Is the Sherri Hill size chart available in centimeters?
Yes. The size chart on this page shows every size from 000 to 26 in inches and in centimeters; use the Inches and Centimeters buttons above the chart to switch.
Where can I try on Sherri Hill dresses?
Sherri Hill dresses are sold through authorized retailers. Use Find A Store to locate one near you. Trying a style on is the surest way to confirm your size, and if your size isn't in the store, the retailer can check whether it's available to order.
